The game featured SMU (6-6) against Fresno State (9-3) and was played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

The SMU Mustangs are coached by June Jones, the former University of Hawaii head coach.

The Mustangs, behind standout quarterback Garrett Gilbert, led 22-0 at halftime against the Bulldogs. Gilbert had 17-yard touchdown run and teammate Zach Line had an 8-yard run to go along with a safety and 30- and 49-yard field goals from Chase Hover.

All scoring came in the second quarter.
